What a new randomized, placebo-controlled study found — and what it doesn't (yet) tell us.

Fucoidan is a natural polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds such as Undaria pinnatifida (also known as wakame), Mozuku, and Fucus. It has been the subject of ongoing scientific research exploring its properties, including antioxidant activity and its role in supporting the body's natural processes. As part of our commitment to staying informed on the latest fucoidan research, we wanted to share a recently published study that we found particularly interesting.

About the Study

In July 2026, a study titled “Fucoidan from Undaria pinnatifida Improves Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Symptoms in Men: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study” was published in the peer-reviewed journal Research and Reports in Urology. The study was funded by a supplier of Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan extract.

The 90-day study involved 95 men aged 45–80 with moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common and non-cancerous prostate condition that becomes more prevalent with age. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a daily fucoidan supplement or a placebo, and neither participants nor researchers knew who received which (a “double-blind” design, considered a gold standard in clinical research).

What the Researchers Reported

According to the published results, participants in the fucoidan group showed statistically significant improvements in their International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) — a standard questionnaire used by clinicians to assess urinary symptoms — compared to those who received the placebo. The researchers also reported improvements in quality-of-life measures related to urinary symptoms, and noted that fucoidan was well tolerated, with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels remaining within normal ranges throughout the study.

Limitations Noted by the Researchers

       The sample size was relatively small (95 participants) and conducted at a single point in time.

       The 90-day duration limits what can be concluded about longer-term effects.

       Several secondary measurements (such as urinary flow rate) did not show statistically significant differences between groups.

       The researchers called for larger, longer-term studies to confirm these findings.

“The magnitude of improvement observed in the present study should be interpreted within the context of a nutraceutical intervention and not as equivalent to established pharmacological therapies.”

We think it's valuable to stay informed about emerging fucoidan research, and this study represents a rigorously designed clinical trial on a topic — prostate health — that affects many men as they age.
